Wiki du Laboratoire LITIS

Doctoral formations

Except for the CIFRE theses, which work a little bit differently, you are required to do some doctoral training during your thesis. It is the doctoral school (ED) MIIS which fixes the quota that you have to realize, a quota which is generally divided between “scientific” trainings and “non scientific” trainings. More information may be found on the SyGAL website.

The objective of these trainings is above all to “get you out” of the laboratory and not to let you isolate yourself, at least in theory. It is not certain that you will find enough interesting training courses to fill all of what is required of you, you will still have to lose a few hours to complete the number of hours indicated by the ED. This is why you are advised to take these courses as soon as possible (see the thesis commandments).

Description of formations

Scientific formations

The role of scientific training is first and foremost to make you more competent in technical notions. You can therefore choose trainings related to your subject, among the proposed trainings. These trainings can also be realized with master level courses or summer/winter schools, all this is to be discussed and validated with the doctoral school.

Non scientific formations

The role of non-scientific training is officially to open you intellectually to other issues than your simple scientific subject. Nevertheless, the numerous feedbacks are hard to be positive about these trainings. This does not mean that some of them can be useful to some people, but in the majority of cases, you will surely experience it as a waste of time. Nevertheless, it is important to fulfill the quota of hours requested, or to come close to it, so as not to be bothered by the administration at the time of the defense.

Among these courses, you can take English courses that can be useful. You will also find training to learn how to read more quickly, write documents with latex or organize meetings, for example.

Teaching formations

If you wish to teach, you will be asked by the INSPE (Institut national supérieur du professorat et de l'éducation) to attend pedagogical trainings, especially if you carry out a teaching mission. Among these trainings, some will be compulsory, such as the first information meeting as well as feedback meetings.

INSPE will tell you that there is a minimum amount of pedagogical training that must be completed before you can teach your first hour. The reality is that INSPE training is often only available in the second year of your thesis, during your first year of teaching. So it is physically impossible to make that quota before you give your first class.

The idea is to play the game of INSPE, by doing some courses that are part of the non-scientific training quota that you must complete. However, do not expect any major pedagogical lessons during these trainings and if you have any questions about your teaching practices, we advise you to discuss them with the colleagues with whom you share the subject.
